2024 – 2027
Funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Disaster Ready Fund.
The project
Climate Partnerships is a three-year project working with community service organisations to strengthen place-based resilience in the Campaspe and Yarra Ranges communities.
Through a process of coalition building and collaborative planning, this project aims to strengthen community resilience to climate change and disasters by building the capacity of local organisations (including community legal services, health services, community service organisations, emergency management and local government) to prepare for and respond to local risks.
The project will be delivered through a partnership between Jesuit Social Services’ Centre for Just Places, ARC Justice, Eastern Community Legal Centre, and the Federation of Community Legal Centres.
Upholding climate and disaster justice is a priority for community legal centres, whose collective mission is to promote access to justice, often through a place-based approach. Access to legal advice and holistic support is essential for effective recovery after extreme weather events, to address the immediate harm and to stop legal issues escalating.
The Climate Partnerships project is taking place on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri, Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung peoples.
The impact
Taking a place-based approach focused on equity and justice, this project aims to:
- Build capacity and understanding among community organisations of how climate change and disasters can entrench, exacerbate and create social inequities.
- Recognise and uphold the value of diverse organisational knowledge in identifying local priorities and needs.
- Create awareness of the vulnerabilities and strengths of community organisations to prepare, plan and adapt to climate change and disaster.
- Design and implement a ‘Collaborative Action Plan’, which will articulate a shared vision and guide for strategic, place-based action on disaster and climate change resilience.
